What’s In The Box?

Everything is included with the Heininger Portable Propane Outdoor Fire Pit 5995 except the fuel and the propane container itself.

So, along with the actual 19-inch diameter fire pit, you get the propane hose, adjustable regulator, plus decorative lava rocks to place on top of the propane fire ring.

How To Setup Your Propane Outdoor Fire Pit.

You will need a 20-pound fuel container to connect to your propane fire pit.

Assembly is remarkably easy even for the mechanically challenged. You get three different bags of rocks.

Set-up is a doddle, simply choose your location, connect your full gas container, scatter the rocks on top of the burner, (they are ready to go straight out of the box)
no smoke, no fuss, no faff.
The secret is to install them in the fire pit in the correct sequence.

Start with the smallest and progress to the larger ones. Be careful not to block any of the holes in the fire ring.

Once you’ve got the rocks in the fire pit, the next step is to attach the hose to the fuel container and locate it a safe distance from the fire pit.

That’s the whole point of having a larger hose as this model provides. It gives you safer options and makes it easier to get the gas container out of the way.

How To Light The Heininger Portable Propane Outdoor Fire Pit 5995:

Be sure to light the propane firepit in the safest way possible.

That means leaving the valve on the fire pit closed and then slowly turning the knob on the fire pit valve to let just enough propane through to ignite it as you hold a BBQ starter close to the burner.

There’s a safety mechanism built into the regulator that prevents you from turning up the propane too high at the start.

All it takes is a little bit of gas getting through so you want to turn the gas on slowly.

If you go too far too fast, it will trip the excess flow safety switch, there will be a noticeable click if this happens.

This is designed to prevent a fireball when you ignite your fire, it shuts it down automatically so you are safe.

At this point, you need to turn the fuel off and wait a few seconds before trying it again.

Separate covers are available to help disguise the gas container making the area look neat and tidy.

Although Heininger makes their own cover it has been unavailable since the COVID 19 pandemic started so we have changed our link to a standard cover that is hard-wearing and available.

We may change it back if the Heininger cover becomes available again.

Important Note:

I think that it’s important to mention that this Heininger outdoor firepit does not have automatic ignition. And there’s a good reason for this.

A piezoelectric igniter emits sparks, therefore would not be compliant with CSA standards during fire-bans.

Although this firepit doesn’t have an electronic igniter, it is fairly easy to start with a long-neck barbecue lighter and can save you some money.

A lot of those built-in igniters don’t last and you end up resorting to a portable starter anyway.

You can find these grill-type lighters at any grocery or outdoor store. Another option is to use those long matchsticks.

At this point, it’s just a matter of getting the flame to the desired height and allowing the coals to warm up in order to deliver sufficient heat output.

Note: When you first light your fire-pit the flames will not be very high, don’t be disappointed after about 10 to 15 minutes you will have beautiful blazing high flames to gaze into.

What’s not to love?

Once you’ve attained your level of comfortable heat output, the firepit is virtually maintenance-free.

How Do You Adjust The Height Of The Flame?

Getting the flame to climb high and spread out across the fire-basin can take some practice. Simply rearrange the stones differently.

A propane firepit like this is as close as you can come to replicating a real firewood-burning experience.

Think of it in terms of a gas grill. It’s not meant to have wood or charcoal added to it.

The lava stones and the propane are more than enough to create the look and the warmth that you want. It’s also very clean and convenient to use.

Tip: Adding a few extra pounds of decorative rocks will give you more heat and higher flames.

Once the rocks heat up, you can really feel it since they radiate 58,000 BTU, perfect.

To get the most attractive fire possible make sure you follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

That means having a nice amount of lava spread over the whole firepit.

How Long Does It Take For The Propane Fire-Pit To Heat Up?

heininger-5kg-replacement-lava-rock

It takes about 10 to 15 minutes for the lava stones to heat up but once they do, they radiate significant heat that feels warm and toasty.

You don’t have to consistently add anything to a propane firepit either.

On the high setting, this tends to use quite a bit of propane.

Tip: Adding a few extra pounds of decorative rocks will give you more heat and higher flames.

How Long Does The Heininger 5995 FirePit Take to Cool Down?

When you’re done with your fire-pit you can easily shut it off, let it cool down, your fire-pit will be cool to the touch in around 15-20 minutes.

Disconnect the hose and it’s ready to put away without any of the clean-up associated with wood-burning fires, making the Heininger portable propane outdoor fire pit 5995 an ideal accessory when tailgating or on a camping trip. Now off to bed for a good night’s sleep.

Added Advantage

This Heininger portable propane outdoor fire pit 5995 also comes with a 10-foot hose.

This makes it easy to put it outside of your circle of chairs and basically place it out of sight as you enjoy a leisurely get-together beside the fire.

Some buyers have replaced the 10-foot hose with an even longer one and you can certainly do that too.

Should you decide to do this it’s always best to go to a gas specialist to make sure the hose you get is up to the required standard.

What Size Fuel Tank Should I Use?

Although you can use a small canister of gas with the correct adapter, you won’t have a lengthy fire.

new 20lb propane tank

Those small 1-pound canisters only last about half an hour to 45 minutes, tops.

Like most portable fire pits, the Heininger is designed to connect to a standard 20-pound propane tank

The Heininger portable propane outdoor fire pit 5995 is made to use LPG as its only fuel source.

Note:  There is no compatible adapter available for converting this model to natural gas.

How Long Does A 20 Pound Fuel Tank Last?

One of the often-cited problems with fire pits and grills is their rapid consumption of fuel. At full bore, a standard 20-pound tank of gas should last anywhere from seven to eight hours, depending on the wind conditions.

So that’s about two nights of 3 1/2-hour long fires. Keep in mind, that’s at the highest setting.

You can certainly turn it down and extend the time you get with each refill.

How Many People Can Sit Around The 5995 Firepit?

The  Heininger portable propane outdoor fire pit 5995 can comfortably hold anywhere from two to six people depending on how close and how large your seats are.

If you want to be able to host a larger crowd, you might want to go for a larger diameter firepit, such as the Outland Firebowl 883 which is 24-inches in diameter and can seat up to 10 people. Perfect if you party a lot.

How Easy Is Heininger Portable Propane Outdoor Fire Pit 5995 To Transport?

This little firepit is exceptionally easy to transport, with its small 19-inch diameter and weighing only 22 pounds, it will fit into almost any vehicle, even a small car.

Heininger-Destination-Gear-Carry-Bag-for-Portable-Fire-PitYou can just pop it in your car and take it with you, to the beach, a friend’s party, or camping, in fact anywhere you like. (subject to local restrictions)

A carry bag is available separately it’s a bit pricey but worth the investment if you travel a lot as it holds the firepit and all the bits together in one place.

Alternative Look

For a different look, Some folks prefer fire glass over rocks. Glass can be used in place of, or on top of the lava stones. But for warmth, the rocks are superior.

Check your user manual to make sure this is allowed.

Can I Use The Heininger Portable Propane Outdoor Fire Pit 5995 For Cooking?

Although this outdoor firepit is not designed for cooking meals, you can cook marshmallows and s’ mores on sticks, this is a lot of fun for kids and adults alike.

One point to keep in mind if you’re using your fire-pit to cook, hot dogs, sausages, and the like, they are greasy.

Any fat dripping down onto your decorative lava stones is likely to burn and create a horrible mess that you will have to clean up afterward. (who wants that?)

Grease can also block the vents at the bottom and ruin your firepit.

The purpose of a firepit is to produce heat if you really want to cook food outdoors then you should consider investing in an outdoor grill.

Is The 5995 Fire-Pit Weather Resistant?

While the distributor claims that it’s an “all-weather firepit”, we don’t necessarily recommend leaving yours outside and exposed to rain, snow, or sleet.

This model is handy whether you want to simply light up your patio, generate warmth on your porch, or take it to your friend’s party.

Heininger portable propane outdoor fire pit 5995 coverThe Heininger portable propane outdoor fire pit 5995 is available as both a standard model and the standard model with a cover typically at about 33% higher in price.

So, if you’re willing to spend a bit more, you can get the same unit and help protect it from the elements (when you’re not using it) with a cover lid

Can This FirePit Be Used On A Wood Deck?

Even though these pits do not get hot on the bottom, it’s not recommended that you use them on a wooden deck.

It’s designed to be used on any outside patio, driveway, parking lot, or flat ground area.

Since the base of the model itself does not heat up, it seems to be safe on the grass with no reports of any damage to the grass underneath.

Safety Warning: If you must use it on a wood deck, make sure you use an insulated fireproof mat underneath the fire pit.

As with any fire, including one in a propane-fueled fire-pit, you will need to keep an eye on it at all times. Safety is paramount.

While there’s no smoke or embers flying around under normal use, the potential for danger is ever-present.

A little common sense can go a long way in protecting your family from danger especially if you have little ones. Their curiosity is never-ending.

As with anything made of steel, you want to protect it from the elements as best you can.

That’s the best way to extend the life of your beloved fire-pit and ensure that you get more enjoyment from it when the weather is good.

Cold Weather Recommendations.

It’s also a good idea to keep your gas tank topped up in colder weather.

As it gets colder outside, the tank tends to lose pressure. With less pressure, there’s less gas going to your fire pit.

You can get a lot more mileage from your outdoor fire pit if you can turn the setting down to medium or low once you get the flame firmly established.

These fire-pits are a lot like barbecue grills. They tend to use gas in a similar fashion.

The amount of fuel you have remaining determines how high the flame is, the warmth it generates, and how long you can keep it running.

So, you’ll want to experiment with your particular settings to get it the way you want.

Tip: Having a spare tank at the ready is good housekeeping, there’s nothing more annoying than when you run out of gas just when the party is in full swing.

Believe me, we’ve had that embarrassing experience.

Do Weather Conditions Affect The Fire-Pits Performance?

In windy conditions, this firepit is a lot like your typical barbecue. It still works, though not quite as effectively.

It’s not at its best on a windy day or night simply because the wind diminishes the flame, minimizing the heat it can crank out.

Note: Strong gusts of wind could blow out the flame

Is The Heininger Portable Propane Outdoor Fire Pit 5995 An Effective Outdoor Fireplace?

How much actual value you get out of this fire-pit is really determined by the way in which you use it.

The  Heininger portable propane outdoor fire pit 5995 is primarily designed for creating the ambiance of a real campfire without the drawbacks as it burns clean and smokeless.

This little beauty throws off 58,000 BTU which is significant heat on a chilly evening.

But in very cold temperatures, there may not be enough sustainable heat to offset the cold air.

The problem is that you’re out in the open so the heat generated is quickly dispersed into the atmosphere.

However, one buyer traveled through some rough terrain including Alaska and found the Heininger portable propane outdoor fire pit 5995 to be very robust and warm.

  • Cover straps: It would be better if they clamped on rather than strapped on.

  • Rusts: It’s not the most weatherproof fire pit and it can rust fast if left outside.
